Knowledge and Understanding of the World

Use a cornflour modelling dough - see activity opposite. (K1)

Physical Development

Pretend to be a snowman melting on a hot day. (PD1)

Use airflow balls or beanbags as imaginary snowballs. Practise catching and aiming. (PD7)

Use white skittles or plastic bottles decorated as snowmen to practise aiming. (PD7)

Creative Development

Make snowy ‘spatter’ pictures using white paint on black paper. For this you need brushes with short, firm bristles. (Old tooth brushes which have been sterilised are ideal.) Show the children how to dip the brush into the white paint and then to spatter paint onto the paper by either a sharp flicking action, or by running a finger towards themselves along the bristles. This takes practice and can be messy, but is highly enjoyable! Added interest can be achieved by laying templates onto the paper before splattering, and seeing the shape left as they are removed at the end of the activity. (C3)

Make up a dance to the music from a video or audio tape of ‘The Snowman’. (C5)

Sing ‘Jingle Bells’. (C5)

Use desiccated coconut and/or glitter to make ‘snowstorms’ in see-through plastic bottles (see activity opposite). (C3)
